Students
More than 130,000 students come to study in Canada every year. Foreign students bring a rich culture to our classrooms. Your knowledge and skills are welcome in our schools. It is possible to work in Canada while you are here as a student, and there are opportunities for jobs on and off campus. You will need to apply.
For more information about studying in Canada and how to apply, go to Canada Citizenship and Immigration (

Note: Students are eligible to apply for permanent residence through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program if they:
•    completed an educational program of at least eight months from an eligible post-secondary institution in Manitoba and
•    received a post-graduation work permit and also have a long-term full-time job offer from a Manitoba employer for whom they have been working for at least 6 months.

Temporary Workers
A work permit is needed for most temporary jobs in Canada, though for some positions and business people it is not necessary. More information on work permits for temporary jobs can be found here
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.asp

The process of being hired as a Temporary Foreign Worker is a joint effort between the employer and potential foreign worker. Foreign workers are treated like Manitoba workers. Every employer intending to hire a foreign worker must register with Manitoba Employment Standards which improves protection for foreign workers. http://www.gov.mb.ca/labour/standards/asset_library/forms/wrapa_er_registratiion_app.pdf

As a next step the employer needs approval from Service Canada, which is called a “Labour Market Opinion” (LMO) and assesses the impact of hiring a foreign worker on the Canadian labour market. http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/contracts-forms/emp5239e.shtml

Once the employer receives a positive LMO the foreign worker can apply for a work permit.
Detailed steps of the process and tips can be downloaded here: (pdf how-to-hire a foreigner, tips for LMOs)
